Well, according to the Bible, yes. This is going to be very Lutheran of me, but I've already started, so I may as well explain it as best and briefly as I can.
The Bible states this: "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and not that of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works that men may boast." (Ephesians 2:8)
The Bible also sports this nice little phrase "All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me but I will not be brought under the power of any." (I Cor 6:12, I would also like to point out that my version of the Bible uses a more archaic variant of English)
So, indeed, even a smidgen of faith in Jesus is all that is necessary to save us. Why? Because no matter what we do to prove our "sinlessness" to God, in the end it's all pointless. The most righteous among us eventually become self-righteous, and nearly every good act done in the name of God or one's own self instead of being nice to that person is only another futherance into sin for us. Pride rears its ugly head even upon the best of us all. One of the faults of being imperfect is that you are going to give in to sin eventually. And in God's eyes, a "minor" sin is just as bad as a major sin. Anger and just being annoyed grants you the same punishment as a mass murderer would recieve.
So this is justification by faith, we can't save ourselves, so God sends His Son down to uphold the Law perfectly, and give himself as a blood sacrifice for all the rest of humanity, from here to eternity.

Quite a messy question, all the answers given so far are correct according to the answerers different denominations. I would think belief in God alone wouldn't be sufficient to outweigh mortal sins, because belief in the law doesn't cancel out punishment by it.

Dear san antonio, The answer is No, let me explain by asking you a question. A man is in a court of Law guilty of multiple crimes and he says to the Judge bfore the verdict, "Your Honor Im sorry for what Ive done and I "belive' in you and belivve that your forgiving and you will let me go." would that Judge let the criminal go? of course Not, the criminals belifes are irrelevant to the fact he has broken the Law a multitude of times and because the Judge has an uncomprimising obligation to make sur Justice is Done, he must punish the criminal. Lets now take that to the courtroom of Gods law. I would like to put you on the stand for a Moment and I want to examine you under the light of Gods Law to see How you will do.
Have you ever lied (even once--fibs, white lies, etc.)? Ever stolen (anything--the value is irrelevant)? Jesus said, "Whoever looks upon a woman to lust after her, has committed adultery already with her in his heart." Have you ever looked with lust? If you have said "Yes" to these three questions, by your own admission, you are a lying, thieving, adulterer at heart; and the BIble say's "he who hates his brother is a murderer." Nothing you’ve ever done is hid from His holy eyes. Will you be innocent or guilty on the Day of Judgment? Listen to your conscience. You know that you will be guilty, and it dosent matter how much you belive in God, your belifes wont erase your guilt on judgement day. because the BIble makes clear Gopd is the Just Judge of the Universe, he must make sure sin is punished, and the place of punishment for your sin is Hell. That’s not God’s will. He provided a way for you and I to be forgiven.
He sent His Son to take our punishment: "God commended His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." He was bruised for our iniquities. Jesus then rose from the dead and defeated death.
Your own so-called “goodness” can’t get you into heaven any more than mine could. Jesus is the only way to Heaven. He is the "Door," the only "mediator." There is salvation in no other name, so repent (turn from sin), and place your faith and trust in jesus, if you will do so God wil forgive you and grant you the gift of everlasting life not because you have a "belife" in Him, but because the Holiness of jesus can now be accredited to your account becuase of his suffering death on the cross.

Yes
Any sin can be forgiven, provided that the sinner repents and believes in God and the sacrifice that Jesus made on the cross to pay the price for sin so that sinners (and everyone is a sinner) can go to heaven.

Sincerity of belief doesn't save anybody. After all, it's possible to be sincerely wrong! What matters is the OBJECT of belief.

Your question produces different answers, because the "faith" have different meanings. Christ Himself compared the faith to the smallest of seeds, to denote that true faith is humble, and in the other place He said, that seed won't bring fruit if it won't die first. So, mere acknowledge of God's existence is not yet a sincere faith, i would say.
