How much are you going to spend? Have you looked at the Scion? It is made by Toyota, just change the oil and go. It is a good looking sporty car. It will have the looks, fuel milage and the Toyota reliability.....

Best answer is to go to a dealership and test drive a few. A Mazda 3 is a fun little car that would get good gas mileage and wouldn't be that bad on insurance. It would also have some room for friends because of it's four doors but it doesn't look too bad for a four door. A Ford Focus is a very similar car but it has two doors. A Mustang (espically the GT) would be a little sportier of course you would pay for that in the gas mileage and the insurance. But it's up to you and your preferences. I would go test drive and see what you like.

"Cool looking" is in the eye of the beholder, but for the rest, Toyotas tend to run trouble-free forever; and Scion and Lexus are Toyota divisions. Same with Subaru. Their reputation isn't as good in general, but I love my VW, have 120,000 miles on it and have had no repairs. Mazda is partially owned by Ford . . . personally I view Fords as probably the least reliable, etc. vehicles, but some people swear by them. So . . . bottom line? Probably buy what you like, take just reasonable care of it -- you do NOT have to go "by the book!" -- and it'll likely serve you well. Best wishes!

I have 2 words for you - JAP CAR!
Mazda 3 is a fine car. It's sporty, cute, economical and is good on gas. The Scion Tc would be another good choise. Ditto for the new Honda Civic. If you want a step above those, I would get a Nissan Altima.

You want a safe car? Try a '57 Chrysler Imperial. It's the only car that was banned from demolition derbies. They were indestructible. If not, go with the Evo.

Get a BMW 335 CI. Even if it's a little out of you budget, you should go to the dealership and test drive one, it's a PERFECT car, no joke. Then you can go test drive whatever car you want and you'll see the comparison immediately.

The Mazda 3's are very nice, and very affordable. Great on gas, 30+ miles per gallon on the highway.
My stepfather bought one just to commute to work in to save money on gas. He loves it.
It's very stylish and roomy too.
