it has been going on for a long time .
Ghengas Kahn burned all the forests and filled the wells with water ,and people have tried to restore that for centuries.his Son Kubli Kahn made Pareadaizas (where our word for paradise came from)kind of the oposite of Ghengas
In israel they tried to restore the desserts with huge irrigation projects,in Africa some people have restored some very small pieces of the sahara
In Arizona they have succesfully restored dessert by rolling the ground with a heavy roller with triangular spikes
this punches holes in the ground which condese one drop of water on one seed of grass, and by planting trees afterwards on top of shallow hole lined with compost which hold water under the ground it is possible to restore dry ground ,with a lot of work.
if you want to know more on how to restore dry ground or tired or over used soil ,read -dryland strategies in the Permaculture designers Manual by Bill Molisson
