what is a stem cell??

i have search the whole internet and even here and i can't figure out what a stem cell reseach is and why it is wrong so answer PLEASE.............

Stem cells are the first cells that develope after conception. They are cells but they haven't been programmed to develope into a certain cell. They are what make the zygote. Research is the theory is that they can be told to develope into any cell so they can technically cure a disease where "something is missing."The reason why some people think it's wrong is because thye believe life starts at conception and that getting the stem cell would mean killing a living thing.
I personally support Stem Cell Research.

a stem cell is a cell that divides to produce all the mature cells of your body. Stem cells are long lived, almost immortal. Stem cells themselves are not active in the body like mature or differentiated cells. Stem cells divide, making copies of themselves and new mature cells to replace old mature cells. This keeps your body supplied with new cells. Aging may be caused by a lost of stem cells. Cancer stem cells are mutated stem cells that produce cancer cells.

Stem Cells are cells that can be develope into different types of body cells.
Stem cells are not just from embryos..There are also adult stem cells as well.

Stem cells are "blank" cells. They have the potential to be used for anything (if they come from embryos) because the body hasn't "assigned" them specific jobs yet. It could be turned into cells to repair spinal chord injuries or cells to fix defects in the brain, liver and other organs. Basically they are cells that are waiting for their orders and if we choose what they will do, we could potentially end many diseases that result from cell and tissue death or damage.

Adult stem cells live in the bone marrow. They are blank cells that will mature into blood cells. They are already assigned to that job. They are often used to "rescue" patients that are given large doses of chemotherpay or radiation when normal treatments can't seem to kill all of the cancer. (I had a stem cell transplant last May for my Hodgkin's Disease) Since these cells already have their "job" which is to become blood cells (white cells, platelets, hemoglobin...etc) they can't be altered into other types of cells the way embryotic cells could.
