I am appalled that so many people assumed I was encouraging a fat, lazy child and my daughter would not have a legitimate need. Those people should be ashamed of themselves. This is a very difficult time for our family and I hope that maybe people learn to not always jump to conclusions.

My daughter is ill and was just recently diagnosed with a chronic severe health condition. She is often in tremendous pain and that makes it difficult for her to walk long distances.

She is trying to live as normal a life as possible and we thought a stroller wouldn't stand out as much as a wheelchair.

A big thank you to those people who understood our situation and offered helpful information.

An 8 yr old is perfectly capable of walking! No wonder kids are fat now days!!

edited to add:

Although I sympathize with your situation, that's what the additional details section is for! Just don't come here asking for a stroller for an 8 yr old! Think about it- they don't make strollers for 8 yr olds!! Strollers are for babies. Have you ever saw a 3rd/4th grader being pushed in a stroller by mommy?? I'm sorry that your child is having problems but the solution you need is a wheelchair.

She would probably stand out more as an 8-year-old in a stroller than in a wheelchair.

Our daughter has CP and we just got her a really nice STROLLER (for those people that say there are only wheelchairs). The one we ordered was from dreamerdesign.com called the Axiom. Feel free to contact us by email if we can be of any assistance.

sorry to hear about your daughters situation. i would suggest that you e-mail a company that makes strollers and see what they can do for u or u could ask your doctor they should be able to assist you. there should be some kind of group in your community that is specifically there to help children if u do go to them and ask if there is anything they could do to help. in my community it is called optimist international which i am a member of. I have not had your experience so can only give u the answer that comes to mind sorry again

Wow..I was actually shocked myself seeing how people can be so cold hearted with what their responses were. I actually found a website that has stroller for special needs...here is the link

http://www.joggingstroller.com/Stroller-Features/Special-Needs/index.cat

Some of them even hold up to 200lbs which is GREAT...you could use that for a VERY long time.

Just do a search for special needs strollers and you will find links. I assume an 8 year old who needs a stroller has a legitimate need for one and is not just lazy as others are implying.

Not sure if they make them that big. Unless your child has a disability they should be walking where ever you go. Too many kids don't get enough exercise as it is, and a lot of them are becoming obese at early ages and getting what where once considered "Adult Diseases", like Type II diabetes, High cholesterol, High Blood Pressure. If your child has the ability to walk, make them.

Is there is a genuine medical problem? You should be supplied with something from your local hospital.

EDIT: I just saw your additional details, I just wanted to offer my support and wish you all the best. You can probably get very stylish wheelchairs for children these days, you don't have to be stuck with a grey monstrosity, your hospital should be able to help you track down the things you are looking for. Good luck, and God bless xx

I would think that Easter seals in your area should be able to come up with something that is an acceptable alternative to a wheelchair. I totally understand that being forced to use a wheelchair would put undo stress on the fragile emotional state of an already sick child. At least it would if my child were in your child's position. That being said, if there is not an alternative, you should try a wagon that has a stadium seat in it. That way she gets the back support that she needs & can still be comfortable.

As to all of you that thought that this child was lazy & that her mother was supporting her lazy behavior,
SHAME ON YOU!!!!
