You hear that it's because they have unfinished business but then others who die come back reporting that they briefly went to Heaven or Hell. It was beyond their control, they were pulled by some force either way - to the light, or down, down, down. How is it some are 'taken' and others are left to roam the earth aimlessly - both nice spirits and nasty ones who haunt places?
Plus in the Bible the prophet Samuel's spirit was called forth by a medium for King Saul - Samuel asked "Why have you disturbed my rest?" Okay, his rest...... So he wasn't in Heaven praising Jesus with the angels yet? His spirit was still roaming the earth?
I don't know that anyone has a clear answer to this unless they are a prophet of God. But what do you think?

Emotions pull us, even after we die. Earth bound souls are 'pulled' by the energy of those emotions. Heaven may be tempting, but God offers us free will so if we are not ready to let go then we will be drawn back in, or down depending upon how you see it. So, it isn't a matter of 'being taken' as it is a matter of being 'pulled'.
Guilt can leave us in limbo land - not in heaven or hell. Being aggressively pushed out of a body before we know what happened can cause a soul confusion. Some souls aren't prepared to have their 'consciousnes's after they cross over and that can cause them to stay earth bound as well. There are a lot of reasons that souls are roaming the Earth.

This is a complicated question. Let me start at the end.
Jesus had not come yet, and "Paradise" was in the Earth, just like Hell still is Today. The Righteous Dead went there until the Resurrection, that was the "Rest" Samuel was in, Jesus spoke of it as "Abraham's Bosom".
The fact that the Medium,(Witch in The Bible), was able to call him up does not signify that such a practice was acceptable, it wasn't. His spirit wasn't roaming the Earth, no ones spirit is roaming the Earth, then nor now.
When Jesus Resurrected He took "Paradise" with Him, and now the Righteous Dead from before Christ are in Heaven.
Let no one fool you. There never were Human spirits roaming the Earth with unfinished business, they either go to Hell, or to Heaven. The spirits people claim to encounter are Demon spirits, they are roaming the Earth, seeking who they may devour.

well, this is a buddhist answer and i'm not really well verse with it yet, hope you dont mind, every person after they passed away, they wont realize that they are gone, they will go to their love ones(those whom are atached) or the person who harm them and they hated most (those whom they are attached too) they will hand around without these people noticing, for those whom is enlightened, they will see rays of lights, and for those that dont, they will be arrested by the guardians of hell.
If the spirits of good heart, knows that they will take a good rebirth in their next life, or even going to Asuka Realm they will go to the angles or guardians themselven, whereelse those evil ones whom will be banished to the hungry ghost realms keep running and hoping that they might not get arrested by the guardians.
And if not mistaken 1 day in Hell = 1 full month (i'm not really sure about this point, it was told by a friend that it is the reason why alot of "typical" buddhist eat vegetarian meals on both the 1st and 15th day of every month of the chinese calender.
And those spirits that escaped and hiding for 1 year is like hiding for 365 years! (this is the answer when asked dome buddhist friends from different practice)
If you want to know more details, I guess more practical ones, go to a tibetan buddhist temple, I have been a tibetan buddhist since I got alot of andwers from them as I have been searching for a religion that can answer to my questions for the past 26 years !!!

First I think that we all are prophets, so if you listen to your own inner wisdom, you might find your answers by yourself. Since most of us are not this centered and clear, the truth is we all perceive death differently based upon our understanding. So, someone who believes that heaven and hell is found after death might experience this after dieing. Since I don't believe heaven or hell is a place, instead they are levels of awareness, I wouldn't experience either upon death (and won't). You are at a level of consciousness where you are asking questions, but you haven't found suitable answers. This is a limbo time where many viewpoints can shape your awareness. If what I tell you feels right to you then you will be satisfied.
From what I have found along my spiritual path, death and life are just different 'consciousnesses.' Spirituality is completely dependent on your point of view. If someone dies when their point of view is that they are not dead, then some become ghosts. But for someone like myself, I might become an ascended master. There are al sorts of variations in-between. The more you seek spiritual knowledge, the more your viewpoint will change and the less likely you'll have to question what heaven and hell is.

You assume we have a soul. People don't have souls as they only have their thoughts while they're alive. If others are simple enough to think there's something else after death they'll be in for a shock. So make the best of your life now!

Since some people are not christians and don t believe in GOD and his word, they have many questions like this. Please know, if you do not believe in GOD you will go to HELL. If you don t belive in Heaven or Hell. Enjoy yourself as much as you can because this is it for you and don t forget to invite your roaming sprits to you party.

They are not roaming the earth. There is a great gulf between the living and the dead, we can not get there and they can not get back here. They are in a holding place waiting on their judgment from God. If they were in Christ when they died they are already judged, they are with him, and they will always be with him. If they were not in Christ, then they are awaiting the raft of God and the judgment day.

Those aren't human "souls"...although the intention is for you to think that they are...
Samuel was obviously "resting"...not roaming the earth...the "witch of Endor" was more surprised than Saul was, when Samuel appeared, and feared punishment.
Think about it.

Earth is probably pergatory. In all likeliness we are all going to either sleep for ever in death or stay behind for some reason.
Ghosts are not demons, that's just certain religions' use of propaganda to promote the idea of heaven and hell and nothing inbetween.
