Being caught up in so many things, I did not study for the SAT test AT ALL and was sick while taking the test (lucky me). So, I paid the price and got a 1740. =(

I go to a top-20 high school in the U.S., with an average of a 2.83 GPA (average of all years of high school up to current). I have worked at the same place for two years. But I don't think this is enough to get accepted into my desired private college (a decent one, but it isn't super prestigious) let alone get a scholarship or grant. Should I retake it?

yes you should, if you are aiming for a private university, you should probably aim for a 2200 or above.

Yes, under most conditions, it is always a good idea to retake the SAT. Most people take the SAT more than once. I recommend buying a good study guide book or software with practice tests to prepare for it. Spend at least 15 minutes a day practicing and studying. And yes definitely retake the SAT if you need scholarships to afford your dream school. I recommend working on your weak areas of the SAT. A better test score can help your college admission chances a lot more.

Absolutely! An average test-taker gains 30 points on their second test. Consider also taking the ACT, if your target school will accept it. Many people do better on the ACT.
Of course, the higher your scores are, the more likely you are to receive scholarships, so consider investing (or having your parents invest) in a prep class to help you raise your scores. If that's not possible, come to all the free events offered at your local Kaplan center to learn as many tips and tricks as you can. Remember, the standardized tests are just a game: learn the rules, go through it a few times, and you WILL get more points.

good luck!

Well I still congratulate for getting a good score.
Now Go back and study again and retake the exam.
At least you know what to expect on the test and will get a better score.

Look at this site about the scoring table and more info on the SAT

GOOD LUCK:-)

Good grief. NO! It is not a bad score at all. Definitely above average, especially since you didn't study for it, and were sick on the test day.

However, because there's always a however, if you're planning to enter a good college, you should try to raise your score by at least 200 points. This time, study for it, and I think you'll do great.

All the best.

Yup, take it again. I'm sure with a little hard work and prep, you'll do a lot better the second time around and hopefully this time you'll be hale and hearty on test day so you can put your best foot forward.

Good luck!
