It will go bad . There will probably be some mold spots on the skin of the ginger. The best way to keep fresh ginger is to keep it in the freezer. It will last a long time. I would toss the one you have out.

It should be fine. If you see any white spots on the outside of the ginger, it is probably mold. If so, then simply throw it away. If there is no mold then:
Grate a little bit of it up with a fine grater. Taste it. If it tastes fresh and wholesome, it's all right.
By the way, a great way to reduce the effects of too much sugar in the system is to make FRESH GINGER TEA. Here is how it is done.
Boil a quart of water.
Grate enough gresh ginger to make 1/3 cup, less or more.
Put the grated ginger in the boiling water and let it slow boil (very slow boil) for about 20 minutes.
Let it cool a bit, then strain out the ginger. Pour yourself a cup of the warm tea. Do NOT put anything else in, no sugar, no sweetener. It has a delicious sweetness of its own.
I had too much sugar in my system and an Asian doctor had diagnosed this condition. His suggestion was exactly the recipe provided here. Drink several cups of this tea for a month, avoid sugars, reduce carbs, and the condition goes away. PLUS, even if there is no sugar excess, making your own Ginger Tea is a tonic and internal cleanser. Very Healthy and Delicious.

It can get old and lose flavor and sharpness. Yes, after awhile it could spoil, but in the fridge it would take a long time because it is a root. Cut a piece off and see if it is still white and fragrant. If so, you can still use it.

When you find out if it is still good, no mold, okay smell, then remember to put it in the freezer, well wrapped. It will last forever and you can still grate it when it is in it's frozen state.

It could grow mold; at best it's probably dried out. Just go buy a new piece, they're cheap.

Yes, it can spoil if it was not well closed, but generally it does not happen in months.
