My daughter really wants a digital camera for Xmas and I am trying to figure out a good entry level camera. Any ideas? I would like to spend under $100 if at all possible. Thanks in advance!

believe it or not, most of her friends have digital cameras and cell phones.

I would like to get her a digital camera because she is going to start scrapbooking as well. She would not want a character camera, she is not into that. Thanks though.

Well, why not splurge and get her a good digital camera that will last her a long time. I bought the Olypmus Stylus 720SW a few months and it is the greatest camera. This camera is waterproof and shockproof, which is perfect because I'm very accident prone. I dropped it and it still works perfectly with no chips or scrapes. And if it gets wet it's okay. It's actually fun to take in pools and stuff. I bought this camera specifically for a Walt Disney World vacation because I wanted to be able to take pictures in the pool, on the water rides, at the water parks, not have to worry about breaking it, and be able to make an awesome, memorable scrapbook afterwards. Another great thing about this camera is that it's small. It could fit in my back pocket. It's not much bigger or thicker than my Motorola RAZR v3 cell phone. If most of her friends have cell phones and digital cameras, why not treat her, too? She's young, so if she drops it or gets it wet, as you'd expect a child to, it'll be okay. It won't have to feel that it was a waste of your money. You could find this camera for about $300.00 at some online stores. It's kind of expensive, but so very worth it. I love this camera and would recommend it to anyone. You could even use it, too. ; )

I think Fisher Price has a kid's camera as well. A child's model would probably be good for its durability, but the image quality would be less than thrilling.
You might be able to find a discontinued model of Canon, Nikon, Olympus etc for around $100 that would have better image quality, but would be more complicated and fragile for a child to handle.
You could get a pretty nice film camera for about half that or less on eBay. (Hardly any mass market retailers even have a film camera any more.) But that would be a more expensive option in the long run because of the cost of film and processing. Also, she would lose the instant feedback that digital will give her.
I think a camera is a good idea for a child that age. I let my granddaughter use my Canon Powershot sometimes to take a few pictures, and she just turned 5. She actually has made some pretty good snaps! Of course, I am always supervising her during use, but I have been considering one of her own.
I say go for it! It may start your daughter in a lifetime of photography enjoyment!
Good luck!

First of all, that is ridiculous.

But, if you insist, there are cameras that I assume are aimed more for kids. They won't be as expensive in the first place and will be more durable and kid-friendly. Last year Urban Outfitters had a Hello Kitty one. I'm applying to work at a Ritz Camera store and I saw today that they had small Disney digital cameras.

I would suggest getting her a film camera though! Digital everything is taking over, and that sucks. You're getting her started in photography early- might as well do it right. Just don't get her a phone!

A 7 yr old doesn't need a camera. BUT if you feel that she is very careful in not dropping it; loan her yours.

I saw a really cute pink one at Toys r Us. I think it was about $35.00. I'm thinking of getting one for my granddaughter for Christmas.
