Caffeine
Q: What is caffeine?

A: Caffeine is found coffee beans, tea leaves, cocoa leaves and kola nuts. In it’s pure form it is a white powder but we don’t usually see it in this form. In fact we don’t often see it at all. Usually it is just an ingredient in a cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate, or a can of pop like Coke or Pepsi.

Q: What other things contain caffeine?

A: Caffeine is also found in chocolate and coffee–flavoured ice cream. It is also a big ingredient in stay–awake pills and is contained in headache and cold medicines.

Q: How much caffeine is in these products?

A: With coffee and tea, it depends on how strong the coffee or tea is made but, in general, coffee has more caffeine than tea.

Here are some common products and the approximate level of caffeine they contain:

Coffee (1 cup) – 100 mg
Instant Coffee (1 cup) – 30–100 mg
Decaffeinated Coffee (1 cup) – 1–10 mg
Tea (1 cup) - 10-90 mg
Cola drinks (10 oz/280 ml) – 30–60 mg
Chocolate (1.4 oz/40 g) – 20–25 mg
Stimulants (1 tablet) – 100–250 mg

Q: Is caffeine a drug?

A: Yes and judging by the number of places it is found, it is a popular one.

Q: Is caffeine an upper or a downer?

A: Caffeine is an upper because it increases activity in the nervous system.

Q: What does caffeine do to us when we eat or drink it?

A: It can improve our mood slightly, make us more aware of our surroundings and make us less sleepy. It also increases our blood pressure, body temperature and the rate of our metabolism. It also gives us less appetite and makes it hard to fall asleep when we want to.

Q: How much caffeine is too much?

A: A lot of caffeine (like between six and eight cups of coffee), besides leaving you staring at the ceiling when you can’t get to sleep, has a lot of other effects. These include anxiety, depression, stomach problems and an irregular heart beat. Caffeine also affects the calcium in the body and can weaken bones.

Q: Is coffee addictive?

A: Yes it is mildly addictive. As your body gets used to caffeine, it needs more of it to get the same effect it used to get from a smaller amount. If someone regularly drinks about four cups of coffee a day, they can become mildly dependent on caffeine. If they suddenly stop drinking coffee they can go through a minor withdrawal and get headaches and have trouble sleeping. They can also be cranky and depressed for a few days.

I've been drinking coffee since I was in the 2nd grade and I turned out OK. People used to say it was bad fr me but I cant tell that it was. I started with cream and sugar, then I dropped the cream then the sugar and I've been drinking it strong and black since I was a teenager.

It depends on how much coffee you are drinking. A splash of coffee in a lot of milk isn't much more caffeine than a cup of hot cocoa.

They give "coffee milk" to even pre-school children in Japan -- it's just that our society freaks out about coffee and says it will stunt your growth.

As long as you aren't drinking more than one or two cups of coffee a day, I think you are OK. If you are, switch to decaf.

I am a BIG COFFEE drinker. First of all I would suggest talking with your family physican.
Speaking as a coffee drinker myself I would say a small cup wouldn't hurt you but try not to do it on a daily bases.

Best Wishes

Actually it's not to bad to drink alot of coffee. But don't get to hooked on it because after a while it may damage your body. Maybe keep a limit per day or week so you don't get to "hyper"

i don't think 13 year olds should drink coffee at such a young age. first it will rot your teeth and make you smell like your teachers. i guess its safe besides being all full of caffine. why not drink tea?

Coffe tends to make your breath smell bad, and stains your teeth.
I, myself, have caffine issues with the beverage but as long as you drink it moderatly and stop all caffine consumption after 1 pm I don't really see it as a major problem.
Go easy on it though. It can be addictive and you will find yourself with headches more often than not.
