I bought a painting at a flea market in NYC recently - the seller had no idea of the artists name or date of painting. How can I find out who the artist is?

The only way to really be sure of what you bought is to take it to a reliable art appraiser. I have put some on the source page for you, but there must be many many more. Did you buy it as an investment or because you sincerely liked it? The bottom line is whether you like it. And the icing on the cake is if it is worth more than you paid for it and increases in value. Good luck. I also found on line a map with sites marked. do a yahoo search for art dealers in NYC.

These sites seem to have a lot of info: www.absolutearts.com and www.wwar.com.

You can enter an artist name, medium, location, etc. and see what comes up. If the artist is dead some gallery contact might come up. Those galleries can give you more info on the worth of pieces, the time frame, medium, etc. The might be able to put you in touch with buyers (if you are interested). Value of art depends on the condition and if it's an original and when in the artist's career it was produced.

Call the Met and MoMa, ask if they can recommend someone for you.
