You can donate blood if you have tattoos but only after 12 months of having the tattoo done. If you haven't had any tattoos or piercings done within the last 12 months you are more than welcome to donate.

The reason they ask you to wait is because they want to be sure the blood they are receiving is free of contamination. As one of the articles below says they do screen the blood but that "it is a waste of the blood bank's and the donor's time to harvest blood that is tainted and thus worthless."

Hello,

Potential blood donors are not allowed to give blood if they were tattooed within the past 12 months. If a tainted needle was used, blood-born diseases that may develop would be detected after 12 months. The nurse taking the blood can never be sure what needles were used for tattooing, so the 12 month provision is to ensure that anything in the blood is detectable and the blood supply is safe.

You can't donate blood if you have had a tattoo in the past year (at least in the US) because of the possiblity of an infectious disease. A year after your last tatoo, you can donate blood again.

You can't donate blood if you've gotten a tattoo in the last year. Thats the rule here in Australia anyway. I'm not entirely sure why, but you really should be able to if you've had it more than a year...

In Australia you can't give blood for 12 months after having a tattoo. The main reason is if you have been infected with HIV when getting the tattoo (its very rare, obviously), the test isn't accurate until a couple months after exposure. I guess they insist on 12 months to be safe, same goes with piercings (used to be 6 months). Its the same reason they suggest you wait 12 months if you've had sex with someone who lived in Africa. Despite what you write on the donation form, they test your blood for things like HIV, hepatitis, syphilis etc....

There is a risk of contracting hepatitis from un-sterile tattoo equipment, so some blood banks will not accept donations from an individual that has tattoos.

Good luck!

You can, you just have to wait till a year after you get the tattoo. I know this because I'm a regular donor and I have a tattoo. Take a look at the article below.

thats not true, not here in Australia anyway, my dad has 5 tattoos, 3 on his left arm and 2 on his right-a total of 5 and he dontates blood every six months....so I dont know where you get that information from but I think thats false that you cant donate due to your having tattoos.
