I love my VW passat after my first one, then my hubby buying a 65 Bug we are now a VW family and will have nothing else. My Passat has never left me but it's not perfect.
I have found VW's are more like a lifestyle choice. Your choosing a car that has pretty good emissions (yes I know hybrids are the best now but VW's have been doing it for years) and they are well made cars. They handle like you wouldn't believe!! I forgot how great my Passat handled until I was driving a rental car it was a Dodge and just had no control.
But you will hear lots of negatives too...but if you like the car and you love to drive a great perfoming car...get a VW and welcome to the family!!! =)

I have a 2003 v6 Passat wagon and nothing serious has ever gone wrong with it. Oh, 86,000 miles, so it's not like it spends a day at home very often.
I don't know if I should have a Golf Gti, another Passat wagon or something else next. Even the 190hp I have is too much to put through the front wheels in the winter and the only 4x4 VW cars are automatic and I am not in to those. But there's nothing about owning a VW that would put me off another one, just the fact that they don't bring the versions I want to the US.

This is merely a matter of opinion. If you like the car then that is what you should get. I just bought a new rabbit instead of a similarly priced Japanese or American car because I prefer the increased power, and better interior quality. However, the competitors offer better MPG, and VW Customer Service and Reliability is well-known as one of the worst in the United States. More expensive models like the Passat shouldn't be a problem though. The decision is completely up to you. Good luck with your car shopping.

The Passat is by far the most reliable car in the VW brand. However, the Japanese automobiles are still by far the best quality vehicles out there. For the price of a loaded Passat, you can get a well-equipped Lexus or Acura.

I have a '97 Jetta with 208,000 miles. Great car. Beside the normal maintenance items (tires, oil, fluids, filters) I have only spent $1400 in repairs. That includes new shocks and struts, new timing belt and waterpump, valve job, brakes, door locking mechanism, new mufflers and pipes, & a/c recharge. Less than $500 for repairs annually. Cheaper than 2 monthly payments on a new car. I guess Sienna Sue got a bad one!
I had a friend who had a '98 Passat and the only thing that bothered him was the front wheel noise that no one could get rid of. Other than that, he loved it and sold it to a mutual friend who loves it.

Im a vw fan aswell, if i had the money i might decide for the R32 yet aslong as you have seen all factors i:e working fee, areas costs and likewise coverage. it is going to fee alot to run this motor vehicle weekly as you would be using it favourite if on the different hand you dont desire this expenditure why no longer get a mk5 gti or mk4 gti as those could be greater gasoline useful and nonetheless have a competent little bit of potential aswell. i myself am searching for a competent mk2 gti i like the unfashionable seem ideally ninety/ninety one as those comprise playstation as regular, so in case you recognize the place i'm able to get one that must be great. returned on your question eitherway wharever VW you have chose to purchase it is going to nonetheless be the desirable determination afterall german equipped automobiles are away out in a league of their very own.

If your talking a used VW. DON't buy a 1997 Jetta, the worst year ever! Reliabilty is awful. Plus they are very expensive to get repaired! I have a 97 and I can't hardly give the thing away! My advice is do research!

Overall, VW's reputation is not the best, but my 2003 Jetta diesel wagon currently has 120,000 miles on it and I've replaced one headlight bulb, one glow plug, and because they recommend it every 100,000 miles, at 104,000 I replaced the timing belt. It also averages 48 mpg and goes like stink, so to speak! Best car I've ever owned . . . and I've owned a bunch from virtually every major car country over the past 42 years!
