Hi, I'm a pharmacist, and I'm assuming you're referring to "Tussionex" cough syrup. Tussionex does have hydrocodone in it, which is the active narcotic ingredient in Vicodin. It is not directly codeine, but is in the same family, so you do run the risk of having the same itch reaction. Chemicals in the codeine family, besides being pain-killers, also act as cough suppressants, which is why they are used in several cough medicines. The second ingredient in Tussionex is chlorpheniramine, an antihistamine, which can also cause drowsiness. When taken together with the hydrocodone in Tussionex, you can become VERY sleepy and should not drive. Each dose of Tussionex (1 tsp) lasts for 12 hours so you should not take another dose any sooner than that. Because of the CNS depressant actions of the 2 ingredients, Tussionex is a widely abused drug so it is important to be careful in how often you use it if you decide to have the rx filled.

Registered Nurse here; No Hun tussinex does not have codeine in it, it's a mild, usually effective cough syrup for young children and teenagers, with colds and flu. Has a history of being very safe, and non addictive. However if you have additional questions, concerning this medication. Your pharmacist is an excellent source, to bounce questions off of. Thanks for the opportunity to address this question. Take Care!
Hey If CODEINE MAKES YOU ITCH, THIS IS AN ALLERGY, AND YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE YOUR DOCTOR HAS NOTED THIS ALLERGY ON YOUR CHART. ALSO TELL YOUR PHARMACIST, SO THEY CAN FLAG IT ON THE COMPUTER. TO MAKE SURE YOUR NOT GIVEN CODEINE, AFTER FOLLOWING THE ABOVE. EACH AND EVERY TIME YOU PICK UP A PRESCRIPTION, MAKE SURE AND ASK DOES THIS HAVE CODEINE IN IT, I'M ALLERGIC.

It has guaifensin in it. It will make you cough up the mucus.
There's no codeine in it.
Make sure the fact that codeine makes you itch is on your medical record. It's a significant side effect.

ask the pharmacist, that's what they are there for. You can call ahead if you don't want to make the trip.
