Look at a Chevy Cobalt, Honda Fit or Nissan Versa before you buy. I can strongly suggest them because of Toyotas common problems and ugly styling. Last year Toyota had the most recalls, but the media "failed" to notice since millions would stand against them because of thier reputation. These days reputation is nothing, technology advances so fast it cant keep up. For ex: three years ago GM was one of the worst companies, now they have the most top-rated vehicles, and the quality/reliability surpasses Toyota. Honda is still on top of the reliability ratings. Ford also had more recalls than GM and DaimlerChrysler combined, for reasons like exploding engines and wheels falling off. The top-pick for budget/econo cars is the Chevy Cobalt. Its only 11,000 base, is rated 5 stars, extremely safe for its class, biggest in the class, decently fast, comfortable, and a uniquely good looking car. Here is a quote from the Washington Posts review of the Toyota CAmry "one of which is the Chevrolet Malibu, which in my real-world driving experience has been every bit as good and reliable as the much-ballyhooed Camry but has been maligned primarily because it is a Chevrolet". That says a lot about the whole reputation thing. Dodge CAliber is good looking as well, but isnt rated as high. If you insist on a Japanese vehicle the Honda Fit is rated well an is the most versable with its well-designed seats that fold in almost any way. Its surpasses the Toyota and Niassan in looks as well. The Nissan Versa has the highest quality interior and is the biggest of the Japanese hatches. If you want space and comfort in a Japanese vehicle this is for you. On the other hand we have the Toyota Yaris and Ford Focus. They both have ungainly styling and a worse reputation. Common problems with Toyotas are plastic rattling until it falls off. People then complain that when they take it to the dealer to be fixed they just say "The cars are made with so much plastic its practically impossible to fix". On the Yaris you have to select EVERY option, nothing comes standard so be prepared to rack the price up past an alternative, its that way with all toyotas. The Focus has a record for dying a few months after buying, and having many little problems. READ THE REVIEWS and the Cobalt will win. A good direct class alternative would be the redesigned Chevy Aveo (not the aveo5 hatchback) It has a freshend look an quite a few quality upgrades. Its on the bigger end of the econo boxes. (the cobalt is a small sedan). I hope this helps, and if you have any questions fell free to ask

Having driven a Civic for a year and a half now, I'm beyond happy with it. Not one thing has gone wrong with anything related to it. The only issue is my heavy right foot. The Civic is only as economical as your willingness to drive slowly. But I'm still seeing over 28 miles per gallon on the freeway at extra-legal speeds. A more fair comparison between cars would be the Toyota Yaris vs. the Honda Fit. Both models are in their first year and would be only fair choices until the models have had time to shake out any problems. Get a Civic from a dealer. You won't be sorry.

I'm 23 and I love my yaris. I've had it for two months and there's only a few minor things that I don't like about it. My hubby is about 6 foot and it's a little bit cramped driving for him but he likes it too.

Yeah, my brother(who's 20) was going to get one next month. Hes been looking at it for quite some time. I heard that it was very roomy, well priced, ok on gas mileage, safe(perfect for an 18 yo's driving. lol. No offense), and very stylish. Heres a site for more info on it.
