We have a cat who's afraid of EVERYTHING. My wife is petting him now, he is an absolute darling... but he get scared of the most irrational things.
I bet he'd be scared of your down comforter too.
So my wife's suggestion is, "Put something over it." Try putting a bedspread that he likes on the comforter and see if that tricks him. If not... you'll know it's the feel or the smell, and not the look.
...Something else: we have another cat (we have five...) who was a rescue -- a literal rescue: the cops interrupted a guy kicking her to death. When we adopted her, she wasn't really well socialized to people (as you might well imagine). So my wife took it upon herself to give this cat "Nice Kitty Time" every night for 10 or 15 minutes. She'd take her into the bedroom, sit on the bed, hold the rescue cat in her lap and stroke her very softly while saying "Nice kitty, nice kitty" in a soothing voice. Eventually the rescue kitty got to the point where she will jump up on the bed and "ask" for Nice Kitty Time, and wherever we go in the house, she follows us into the room.
So you might try something like this with your scaredy-cat -- try sitting on the comforter with the cat, stroking him softly and making comforting noises. Eventually he'll associate your comforter with being stroked and loved, and he'll get over his fear. It may take a few weeks, but it'll be worth it.
Good luck!

I doubt it's because of some bizarre connexion to the feathers and the, uh, suffering of the ducks involved.
Given what cats do to feathers in the wild and all. Sheesh.
Anyway, mine is getting so fond of an extremely beaten-up old feather duvet that's lining the bottom of a closet that I'm afraid to throw it out. It's old, it's leaking feathers, it's stained, it can't smell very good, and...
Perhaps your duvet is simply too clean? Which I initially meant as a joke, but if it's all nice and new and puffy, I bet it doesn't smell like you, and makes funny noises when walked on. Do you know anybody with an incredibly beat-up duvet you could use to get your cat used to down? (You could probably get one via http://www.freecycle.org/.)

Awww...I totally know how you feel. I love sleeping with my kitty...I call him my Simba-bear because he actually cuddles with me under the covers! When he's not there, I miss him terribly. I have never heard of a cat not liking down. Perhaps he doesn't like your duvet cover. Maybe try a duvet made with a different fabric. Alternatively, you can try laying a blanket over the comforter and see if that does the trick. Good luck.

It's hard to gather why your cat might be afraid of the comforter, but try putting a smaller blanket ( a baby blanket) over the comforter and he may take advantage of it and start sleeping on top of the blanket.

I genuinely have 3 canines, and the little angels have been comprehend to pee on the comforter a time or 2..... i could bypass to the laundromat and use a great gadget. Use popular detergent, additionally upload Oxy sparkling powder (the $one million keep additionally sells a greater value-effective version that works only besides). i could wash on the gentle cycle, with heat water. i would not positioned it interior the dryer although. sturdy success!

The person above had a good idea. Also try to put Pounce or other kitty treats on it that he likes. Probably the feeling on his feet is the problem.
