I would suggest that you take what your doctor has prescribed. 0.5 mg of Ativan is not a high dose. Don't let it frighten you.A good doctor will not allow you to become addicted. You could take the Ativan at bedtime only and see what happens.
I tried St. John's Wort but did not work for me, but might for you. Just don't take it with any other medication without consulting your doctor first.

Tough one since you are talking natural medicines. Vitamin B-12 & Folic acid supplements are thought to be very successful. I have tried St John's Wort and am not convinced at all (I have been on Clonazepam for about 5 yrs). Honestly, and no kidding, the most popular cure for high level anxiety is a cold shower--- some people swear by it.Hope this helps a bit. As far as Ativan goes, the withdrawals when u run out are horrific. Klonopin is much safer, and more effective in my experiences. But you must be weened off of it also. Since cold showers in the workplace arent an option, explore the idea of Clonazepam (Klonopin) starting also with the low dose .5 mg.

Yes, avoid the Ativan and try Clonopin or Seroquel instead, as they are more effective and less addictive.
For natural remedies, the most popular (not necessarily the most effective) are St. John's Wort, Valerian Root Extract, Melatonin, Lavender Oil, and Bach's Rescue Remedies.
Take each of them for at least a few weeks before quitting them, and if none of these natural remedies work for you, try the medications listed above, starting with small doses and gradually increasing the daily dosage.
May God bless you and make you well.

Hi , I was going through a particularly stressful time late last year. I went to the health food shop and they gave me Schuellers (sp?)
Tissue salts. I think they were called Nerve Salts. You chew one every half hour until you feel better. I usually found 3 were enough. Go to your health food shop and tell them it's for anxiety/stress and they will know which ones to give you. They really DO work!

LMFAO. Your doctor knows more about this than some schmuck on Yahoo! There's no such thing as an OTC anti-anxiety medication.. OTCs are medication for acute pain, sleep aids, cold & cough and allergies that are sold without a prescription. Talk to your doctor!!!!

Sounds like you should be talking to your doctor about possible treatment for depression. Or if you are already on an antidepressant, maybe the dose or the drug needs to be changed. Antianxiety medications are usually addictive, and all they do is make you sleep. When you wake up you are still anxious. Personally, I like chamomile tea, but its probably all in my head. Seriously, talk to your doctor about treatment for depression: the symptoms you describe sound more like depression than anxiety.

Valerian Root extract. (Available in Europe under the name Baldrian.)
Also, try Nerve Tonic tablets from Hyland Laboratories.
Both should be available at your local health food store.
