I had a person tell me once that a dry nose on a cat means that they are sick, or is this just an old wives tale? I dont know if i should take him to the vet or not. Or is it okay and is just because he sleeps alot...Urgh...help please...and thanks.

I have had the cat since may so he is about 7 months old, he really isnt acting different. We just got a new cat and he is being more vocal but that i know is normal for adding a new pet, i just wasnt sure if it was a wives tale or if it had any credibility behind it.

If your cat is eating, drinking, sleeping and using the litter box as usual, it's probably ok. Most cats do have dry noses, it's when the nose is wet and runny that you have a sick cat. If your cat's overall behavior has changed, or it's losing or gaining weight really fast, take it to the vet.
And if you are really concerned, take it to the vet anyway to make you feel better.

99% of the time it does NOT mean the cat is sick. I've only had one dog and so I can only guess that it might be more normal for a dog to have a cold or wet nose. But I took an online vet assistant class last year and the instructor said wet noses are just wet, dry are just dry. Normally, no particular reason.
Of course, watch the pet's other symptoms etc...
A cat sleeps something like 12-14 hours a day so that doesn't necessarily mean anything either. Females sleep more than males.
How long have you had this cat?

A dry nose is usually a sign of dehydration or fever. Pay attention to whether or not your cat is drinking. If his appetite decreases, this is a sure sign he does not feel well. If he is not drinking, this is also a cause for concern. Sleeping a lot is pretty much the norm as far as cats go, but if he seems lethargic or is unwilling to get up it's definitely time to visit the vet. A final test for dehydration is to lift the skin from your cat's flank and watch as it goes back into place. A hydrated cat's skin will be very elastic and immediately return to place. A dehydrated cat's skin will return to place, much slower.
A great way to encourage your cat to drink to to get a can of tuna fish in water. Open the can and drain all of the water into your cat's food dish. A healthy cat will gobble up that water in seconds. If yours doesn't, it's a sure sign something is wrong. Good luck.

Its ok when your cat has a dry nose from time to time. He just probably got a small cold, but its nothing to worry about unless he starts to act different and lose/gain weight. My cats get dry noses all the time, its normal.

That's NOT good. If this happens a lot, you may want to get him checked for FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus) and FeLV (feline leukemia virus). Definitely take him to the vet. If he's losing weight and not eating, it could be many different problems. You may end up having to feed him through a syringe with a blunt tip three times a day to help him put the weight back on if he's not eating enough. The vet will tell you if that has to be done. Good luck to the sick little kitty, and I hope the vet bills are low =]

cats mostly get dry chapped noses in the winter if your house is very hot all, the time it's from a dirty furnace or if you have hot water heating a humidifier will help. You can use a warm cloth on there nose than a dab of vaseline will help.

I had a cat with a very bad earmite infection. His nose was desert dry. As soon as he got his ear drops in he got his "normal" cold/wet nose back after 2 days.
It can mean he is sick. Is he showing any other signs besides napping alot? Is he eating good, drinking water, playing, normal pee-pee and poo-poo?
Sometimes the cat needs more water in their diet.
If it continues PLEASE go to the vet.
Good Luck~

I've only heard this about dogs, not cats. However, it's quite possible that this applies to cats as well.
