I never had one, but I've seen a few.

ALL teeth devlop within a cyst. 99.9% of the time, the cyst "goes away" as the tooth erupts out of that cyst. A very small percent of the time, the cyst will start to enlarge if the tooth is impacted. Cysts are not tumors and they are not malignant, but they can do a tremendous amount of damage to your jaw anyhow. I've seen a couple of patients who were as you describe who ended up getting metal plates put into hold their jaws together. As the cyst enlarges, it can actually push the tooth away from the surface, all the way down to the bottom of the jaw - destroying practically all of the bone in its path.

Here's an example for you. In this x-ray, you will see a tooth way down near the bottom of the jaw. It is surrounded by a dark area that is about 4 times as big as the tooth. This is what a cyst can do if you do not remove the tooth and clean out the cyst.

For more, search on "dentigerous cyst" using an "image" search. There are over 100 available.

I had all four wisdom teeth taken out and they all had cysts. I am a dental assistant and majority of people get them ,and they are usually benign. So dont worry you will be fine.
