It was so sore the day after I fell and could feel my leg. Today it is much less sore and I probably could but I am not sure if it's safer to wait.

I'm not doing something wrong. I know how to ride a bike, and I'm in pretty good shape. I was just pushing the limits for how hard and fast I could ride.

I'm not asking about my technique. I'm asking should I ride today?

I ride about 1100-1500 miles a year. I was riding 50-60 mile rides when I was 14, and now I do 100-mile rides once in a while. I've never had sore ankles. Knees, yes, but never ankles.

I'd go to the local bike shop and have them look at your technique, saddle position, equipment, etc etc

ADDENDUM --

So, let me get this straight -- the asker knows he's "riding right" but he doesn't know if he should go riding today?

Gosh, I'm a veteran rider and I use my local bike shop to check my riding form and seat position -- the asker must be wayyy more advanced than I am.

And, the asker has an injury / soreness that is not common with cyclists, so obviously hard core spandex guys like me shouldn't answer??

The problem sounds like a combination of over-stressing the muscle and not getting adequate macro nutrients to repair said muscle, i.e. whey protein. I recommend buying a container and taking a scoop immediately after you work out, and then at least once a day afterwords until the soreness stops, which should only be about 2 days for an intense workout, which your bike ride apparently was. When you tear up a muscle like that (in a good way) you require an additional amount of amino acids to repair it, which are found most abundantly in whey protein. As long as it is not a sharp pain, you should not have trouble riding today, but relax it a bit.

Your ankles shouldn't be sore you legs yes if your ankles are sore either your doing something wrong or it's not the exercise for you. If you mean your legs soak in a hot tub it will at least take the ache down a little and make it more bearable
