I personally meditate in a meadow ontop of a wooded hill. Some people will go to a Zendo, Temple, or monastary. It is all environmental preference.

The temple is the main sanctuary and place of worship, in which services, both public and private, are performed.
The monastery is a complex of buildings, located usually in a spot chosen for its beauty and seclusion. Its function is to house the activities of the monks. Images are important features of temples, monasteries, and shrines in both Theravada and Mahayana . Statues represent the Buddha in postures of meditating, teaching, or reclining.
In Mahayana sanctuaries , the representations are of different Buddhas, Bodhisattvas , Saints, and guardian deities derived from India. In China and Tibet these constitute a pantheon, the worship of which is practically polytheistic. Stupas, Dagobas , and Pagodas are found throughout the Buddhist lands. These structures preserve the relics of Buddha and his chief disciples.
Sarnath in Uttar Pradesh, Bodh Gaya and Rajgir in Bihar, Vaishali and the monasteries in Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh are some of the important holy places of the Buddhists in India.
Japan, China, Tibet, Myanmar, Cambodia, Thailand and Nepal also have Buddhist monasteries and Pagodas .
I have a freind who went to mongolia and he said that the temple was big and beutiful filled with gold statues but just out side the town was falling apart with poverty disease
Hope this helps

Buddhists (don't forget to capitalize the word) worship in temples and at shrines. Temples you can physically go into, at shirnes you must stand outside looking in.

they go to a temple. shintoist go to a shrine, but hindus also go to a temple. originally, jews went to a temple, but synogogues came about as a replacement for the temple of jerusalem and to give them some sense of having a house of worship.
