Why does silence have to be awkward? Relax and enjoy the moment. The right words will come to you if you are not feeling under pressure to always say something.

Sometimes, there is no cure. Other times, it's laughter. I find a joke or saying something funny can often cure those weird moments. But that's only if the other person is cool enough to see that!

I think once you're really comfortable with someone, silence shouldn't be awkward. Only on rare occasions will you meet someone with whom you can continue talking for hours. For all other relationships, the key to keeping silence from being awkward is to not let yourself find it awkward.

Learn to be comfortable with silence in other's company, or bring up a subject that you know they enjoy talking about, and listen, and ask questions.
Soon the awkwardness is forgotten.

Being with someone who makes you feel so comfortable, that the silence is ok. Sometimes you can have a conversation with someone without saying a word.
