Although I thought that I had gone through the worst of adolescence and that I was over with the crazy ups and downs, lately I've been having these weird mood swings and feelings of depression. How do I know what's normal for my age (17) and what may be a more serious condition?

Any behavior that prevents you from living your life to the fullest and diminishes your happiness by any amount is most likely caused by mental illness of some sort.

For most abnormal behavior, the longer it lasts and the more it intrudes on your daily activities, the more likely it is caused by mental illness.

Go to your family doctor if you have one or just straight to a psychiatrist if you know of any where you live, and he or she will be able to tell you if your behavior is more than just normal behavior for teens.

It depends upon how tolerant you are of disappointment. Life is about disappointment until we learn our comfort level, get involved in a career, get educated, develop interests and hobbies, appreciate beauty in nature and in food and in the kindness of other people. We have to drop thinking about ourselves and our needs. No one will meet your needs. Get more realistic.
You should see a therapist if only to rule out bi-polar (manic-depressive) disorder. It's common in late teens and is controlled just fine by medication. With bi-polar it must be diagnosed and treated or one has no life except self destruction.
Most important: If you do not have a whole lot of interests and curiosities and appreciations, you are into yourself and that has to stop.

I'm sure it's normal, when I was your age, I felt the same. Hormones take a long time to even out, and it takes a while to recognize all of them. If you consistently feel sad or depressed, please talk to someone you trust!
