The ones that I know usually don't stop talking unless they are shy. If they are not talking by now, that usually means they are shy. That was how I was.

By the time 3 rolled around my middle daughter was a freakin parrot, and had a very extensive vocabulary, could hold a conversation with anyone and she did, anyone, the bums on the street, etc., she could also repeat from memory-she could replay conversations, word for word. It became a pain after a while and by the time she was 5 she calmed down some what, but then it started back up when she hit 7 and has not stopped since then. She is now working on her masters in communciation.

Check out the sites below for Preschool Vocab information. I am the mother of 2 and I totally agree with the research. Both my Children attended preschool at 4 years old to work on social skills and prepare them for kindergarten. I am also a stay at home mother who use to read and do computer learning skills with the children on a set schedule. Both my children could count to 100 , say ABC.s complete sentences and manners by the age of 3.
I firmly believe it depends on their family lifestyle.
I have an in-law who has a 3 1/2 year old who still does not use the toliet and may speak a handfull of words when HE wants to. Other wise the boy grunts and cries like an animal.
Something to think about!?? Best of Luck
Some Information taken from that study found at :

Variability in child language development
Children’s rate of vocabulary acquisition varies widely even during the first few months of language learning due in part to individual differences in the child as well as environmental factors.

They should be able to talk and verbalize normally. Being able to say full sentences. Some children develop slower than others by nature or environment. If a child is not talking too much at 3, best to seek a doctor, it could be a sign of autism or other disorders.
It could just be the child is a late bloomer, but always good to take precaution. Best luck.

They should have a pretty extensive vocabulary by age 3. If they have a hard time pronouncing easy words or you still have a hard time understanding them then you might need to have their hearing checked. My step-daughter had only 5% hearing until she was 5 because her inner ear was deformed and she is 21 now and still has problems with balance, reading and comprehension.

I'm not sure how many exactly, but a lot. A 3 yr old should be able to carry on a conversation quite well.
