Accurate for the most part, and good analogy for describing the essential functions of sleep.
No question asked earnestly is dumb, but some questions have more obvious answers than others; this question is somewhere in between.
All you really have to do to find out what sleep is for is go without it for a few days and you will learn real fast what it does for you; I know because I had severe insomnia, but at least now I know how indispensable sleep is for us humans.

Scientists still aren't sure exactly what takes place during sleep. We do know that our sleep cycles through a number of phases over and over throughout the night. Each phase seems to have different functions to do with healing and repairing tissue, immune system function, memory, relieving stress/balancing hormones, etc.
The bottom line is that it's extremely important and their are severe consequences of getting no sleep, too little sleep, or even poor quality sleep (in which you don't awake feeling rested because your body wasn't able to spend time in the deeper phases).
I wrote a couple of newsletter articles on the subject which you may find interesting. It lists some of the consequences as well as some tips to getting a good night's sleep. The link's below.

Peter O ! Since when does amenhorrea (not getting one's period) lead to osteoperosis?
I am slightly worried about that because I have an IUD and haven't had a period for like 3 years!
Please clarify your source of information!!!!
Thanks!

sleep is something we all need and trying to go beyond it leads to not being alert to things you see and do after while we just shut down.
sleep/rest is very important if you wish to be successful in life's decisions
