It wants you to specify with examples and comments that prove the statement, for example if the statement you are to support is -The most exciting time in earths history took place during the Apollo Program (1963 - 1972). You would find an example to support this and provide a benefit as well as news quote.

It means that you will have to clearly support the statement with evidence from your readings. Your own personal opinion (unless requested specifically for it) is not enough to support a statement; you must provide information from other sources.
Think of it as winning an argument: giving your own opinion only is like saying "Because" to answer a question, while citing examples and external sources to support your answer would be like saying "Because a) b) c) and d)".... You see how the latter is clearly more effective than the first.

The book does not mean anything the writer request you to understand and understand with evidence, to prove your understanding of the question/statement
