My son's teacher called me today, and said she would like him to get tested because he has difficulty expressing things through words. He is 8, in second grade, and is completely normal. I do notice he has a hard time when hes trying to tell me about something, whether it be a movie he saw, or somethig he wants from the other room. He says "remember that movie we saw with the guy?" When I ask him to be more descriptive, he has a hard time with it. I know he knows in his head what he wants to say, he just cant seem to get it out. Does anyone know what type of disorder he may have? Do you know anyone who has been through this? He is a very smart kid, but I think this may be holding him back in school. Any help you can give me would be appreciated!

My daughter was tested in school and she gets speech therapy in school also, it has helped a lot. It has nothing to do with intelligence, my daughter is a straight a student, in my daughters case it is due to an under bite that effects her speech, she will need braces to fix the problem , she is 8 years old too.Good Luck and definitely do the speech therapy, they are good at what they do.

He definitely has a language disorder. It means that he knows what a toucan, for example, is, but when he tries to call up the word, he can't.
Imagine the brain as a series of filing cabinets. When you're trying to think of the word you want to use, a well-programmed retrieval system goes and gets it and brings it back.
Your son's doesn't work quite right, that's all. He'll work on it in school with an SLP.

the school district in your area does the testing.
basically they test his knowledge.

They will then determine what kind of special class he needs. He may just need speech therapy. I have a 5 year old who has his normal kindergarten class , then on friday's for 1 hour the speech therapist comes to pick him up from his classroom , takes him to her class/office and they work together for about 1 hour.
it's helped him alot.. also playing around with more children helps them develope their social skills too. good luck.

ok my son gets speech therapy from the school board, they come to my home and work with him on different words, pictures but he has autism. the same speech therapy is used in school with other kids that have speech problems. just call ur school board or take him to a kids doctor and they will refer him to a speech therapist for u. The speech therapy helps so much.

At age 8 their vocabulary is growing. They now have words to choose from. When there is something that is exciting to them, they want to tell you.. RIGHT NOW! It is hard for them to find the words since they have some to choose from. I know it sounds silly.. but it is the truth. My advice is, let the school test him. However, I believe that he might just be having problems putting his thoughts to words. I honesltly dont think that he has a problem.

Hello, It sounds like your son could have Broca's Aphasia=an impairment in the ability to produce speech voluntarily (i.e., moving the articulators in a manner required to produce words). Also known as motor aphasia, expressive aphasia, verbal apraxia, or disfluent aphasia.

"They know the words they want to say, but cannot say them."
