It's best to treat it early, when you feel the area "tingling". I've used Zovirax, but I find that Tea tree oil/cream works wonders and it's completely natural. The Body Shop sell tea tree oil, just dab a little on the area with some cotton wool.

A cold sore is a member of the (wait for it) Herpes virus family - so needs an anti-viral treatment to aid in the cure.
An acyclovir based product such as Zovirax works well as this is a medically recognised anti-viral compound.
If you are troubled a lot with them (as the virus never actually leaves your body, but lies dormant) it may be that you have a low immune system.
All other 'remedies' just disinfect the local area & sting a lot!!

Herpes is definitely one of those embarrassing and stressful anomalies that we all wish to avoid throughout our lives. Though, sometimes, we have no choice but to endure it. Bad luck I guess, and maybe even the result of the one time you decided not to use a condom.
For myself, I tried all kinds of different treatments and solutions, both prescription and over-the-counter. It seemed like nothing would work or give me any real results. The only thing that I seemed to experience was negative side effects and frustration. Plus, knowing I would have to use these treatments for the rest of my life didn't make things much better.
It wasn't until I checked online for alternative or natural remedies for herpes. Eventually, I came across http://herpestreatment.kyma.info worked like a charm.
With the resources and knowledge provided, I was able to completely rid myself of the herpes condition. Not just treat it, but actually cure it.
Best of all, it was done naturally- and the bumps/warts have not resurfaced since. So, I know how you feel. Herpes sucks, and sucks bad.
It leaves you bitter about the one who gave it to you, and insecure about yourself, and the possibility of giving it to future partners. I understand the dilemma all too well.
However, there are real solutions and options out there. I wish the best of luck to you, and a speedy recovery!

Treated early, when they start to tingle, acyclovir cream is great. (It is the anti-viral drug in cold-sore remedies)
Once the virus is in your skin it stays there for ever and you get cold sores when you are too busy fighting other infections (like a cold) for your immune system to keep it at bay.
Too much sun can also damage the lips and the virus becomes active.
Keeping your lips moisturised with vaseline or lip balm helps to prevent cold sores and, once you have one eases the pain.

Aftershave helps to take them away but nothing actually cures them, they are a virus and once we catch them they keep on appearing for the rest of our lives.

I get cold sores alot! I even have one going away right now. As soon as my lip starts tingling, I take Lysine. It is a vitamin. I also use some prescription stuff I got from my mom. Take it from someone who gets them alot, Lysine is the best! It makes your healing time shorter.
