If you were drinking other sweetened sodas before, then this decay has been coming along for a while, and you need to catch up with all the decay.
Any sugar-free soda is still acidic, both from the carbonation process (carbonic acid), and from added acid by the manufacturer (usually phosphoric or citric acids). These will not give you classical decay as caused by sugars and bacteria, but it will slowly strip off (erode) the outer layer of your teeth (the enamel). Think of it like paintstripper. Gradually your teeth will start to wear down, become sensitive, and the front teeth will start to chip. Very, very difficult to fix.
My brother-in-law has always drunk Diet Coke, and I am about to pull out 2 of his worn down teeth, do Root Canal Therapy for another 2, make 2 bridges and a few crowns - a lot of work, discomfort, cost, ... and his teeth will still be secondhand.
Drink WATER, WATER, WATER. And I mean fluoridated TAP water, not that stupid bottled nonsense.

Good question and I am curious to see what kind of answers you get. Im in the process of quitting my mountain dew habit for the very same reason you are. I've had to have 2 root canals, one today and one a couple weeks ago, I am an avid mountain dew drinker and have been without dental insurance for 5 years but am currently going to school to be a dental assistant and have found a dentist who is working with me on a payment plan so I can have beautiful teeth and help me land a good job in a good office.
Personally I think any drink other than water is bad for your teeth, even milk has sugar in it but of course not too many people are willing to give up other drinks altogether. Personally I've taken to drinking everything through a straw, which keeps the lquid off the front teeth and helps you to drink less of something, which is helping with the mountaid dew cessation.
Good luck with this, I know it's going to be tough for me.

Crystal Light is sugar free, has 5 calories per serving and is not bad for your teeth.... Now having said that, have you ever tasted it? When I was going to school I swore off all soda and I went out and bought a thing of Strawberry Kiwi Crystal Light, had one glass and the rest is still sitting in my pantry at home. Kudos on cutting the soda intake but you need to find something you like.... Good Luck

Anything with acid and/or sugar is bad for your teeth. Soda, juice, kool-aid, etc. It's not the amount that you drink but the frequency. For example, sipping on a 12oz soda all day is worse than drinking 24 pack of soda in 15 minutes. Moral of the story; bacteria loves acid as much as they love sugar...

Crystal light doesn't have sugar and it doesn't have the acids that soda have. It is better for your teeth.
Make sure you brush and floss.

no that still counts... you would be able to desire to drink 8 glasses of LIQUID an afternoon. they only advise water cos its in basic terms greater desirable to have 8 glasses of liquid that's no longer packed with chemical factors... Water is in basic terms purer. Its superb to function crystal mild yet water is plenty greater desirable via itself.
