It depends on what you mean by "quilt." Many people consider what you can buy in departments stores to be good quilts. Some people don't even really know what a quilt is - they consider any bed covering to be a quilt. If this is all you're looking for, check some of the higher end department stores.

If you ask a quilter, you'll get a different answer. The stuff in most department stores is mass produced and won't last 20 years. If you want a good quilt, you need to buy one that has been made by a skilled quilter. A bed size quilt is not cheap, however. For a queen size bed, expect to spend at least several hundred dollars for an heirloom quality quilt. A well made quilt can last a very long time, however. My grandmother has two cousins who still use quilts they made 60 years ago for their weddings. If this is the kind of quilt you're looking for, find out if there are any Amish or Mennonite communities in your area. They may sell quilts, and these are of the highest quality. You can also check online - many quilters sell their products through websites.

IMO, a quilt is warmer as it can have up to 4 layers of material. I have seen some people use a thin blanket as a liner if they are a hand made quilt. A comforter usually has a "fluffy" filling and doesn't seem to flatten down enough to really keep you warm. You should be able to get a quilt at places like Target, WalMart, Sears. etc. You might also look in the phone book for a store that specializes in quilts, or check out some craft fairs.

Where do you live? I ask this because if you live in Ohio, Indiana or Pennsylvania, you may be able to drive to the Amish communities. Many have "markets" or stores in which handmade quilts are sold. Be prepared to put out big bucks, especially if they are hand quilted.

You could probably do a "Google" search for homemade quilts or Amish made quilts and get several hits.
