Your puppy is so lucky that you want to feed him the very best.
I have been breeding purebred dogs for the past 38 years. Two years ago, I began feeding Canidae. I have tried all the major premium brands of kibble, but since feeding Canidae, I would never want to feed anything else. My old dogs became younger, my pups grew better than ever, and the in between are robust with good health. My dog's teeth don't need cleaned, and they have Sweet breath.
Made with ALL HUMAN GRADE ingredients,
Other great foods are Wellness, Natural Balance, Wysong, Solid Gold, Innova

There is not one singular best dog food out there, but there are a number of brands which are better for your dog than others, & which offer different formulas to suit your dogs needs.
As a breeder, I choose to feed Pedigree. It produces a beautiful shiny coat on my dogs and keeps them in good weight. As far as price, it is very affordable for my needs, I go through a 50# bag in 2 weeks & each bag costs $16.50.
Other quality brands include Nutros, Iams, Science Diet, Purina... all of these are available at pet stores, & some even at your local grocery (much more expensive to shop there).
What makes some brands better than others is typically the fillers used in processing. Diamond brand food uses a formula which is not highly digestible, and produces a lot of excrement, soft stools & bloating in my dogs. Ol Roy has been reported to do the same.
'Fillers' vary by brand, Pedigree produces a bit more stool than Fromms, but I am also feeding a larger quantity to give them the same calories as my friend does who feeds Fromms... so there is a bit of a tradeoff... what fillers are is the undigestible (or less digestible) amount of food that is used to make up the kibble. Just like when you eat a bowl of cereal, it doesnt all disappear into your body, you use the bathroom evenually... but there will be a difference if you at FrootLoops all day vs. if you ate carrots/apples/whole grain bread/lean meats....
Some 'good' brands of dog food, however, are not always the best for your dog. If the pooch has a sensitive system, a lamb/rice formula is usually recommended, & not all brands offer that variety, or in a way that the dog appreciates. Also, protein content can be higher in some brands than others, & those people with large breeds or growing dogs need to be watchful of the levels of protein.
In short, find a food that is a good product for the money, that your dog likes, which produces 2 firm stools/day and which keeps them in good weight & glossy coat. As long as all those requirements are met, you should be OK & assured in feeing a balanced diet.

Pedigree, Alpo, Iams, Eukanuba,Science Diet..all aren't good foods. A good quality food has no corn, wheat, soy, beet pulp by products, chemical preservatives or dyes in it. It will have a named meat source as at least the first 2 ingredients.
Some good foods:
Chicken Soup For The Dog Lover's Soul, Wellness, Wysong, Canidae, Natural Balance, California Natural, Blue Buffalo, Solid Gold

There is no good commercial foods on the market. You need to find yourselves a good organic meat supplier and to that you will add fruits & vegetables. Did you know that all those expensive foods like Eukanuba contain toxins like DTA and DHA (or something similar) these are slow release poisons and are highly detrimental to your dogs health. In America they have what is termed 'The 3 D's', and no animal is too dead, dis-eased, and or dying, they come from all sorts of places, road kill, vets (which are laden with the chemical that kills them), they are all taken to rendering vats and boiled until a scum forms on the top, all of the scum is used in such products such as sorbolene cream, vaseline, moisturisers, etc... and what settles on the bottom is dried and added as a filler in the commercial foodstuffs you feed to your animals. Stick to a safe, and natural diet, as much as possible, and you will not have any health problems in the future.

Never feed Purina, Iams, or Science Diet. They are all but poison to dogs. Read "Foods Pets Die For" by Ann N. Martin for all the gruesome details. You will be shocked and amazed.
Cheers.

Eukanuba, far and away. Science Diet and Purina both have good ad campaigns but if you go to a dog show, you would he very hard pressed to find any dogs on either of those foods. Euk, however, will be in darn near every bowl.

My Tzu eats Bil Jac. Just about pure meat. Takes half the amount for calories to be met as other dog foods. Plus she seems to like the taste. She produces less stool with Bil Jac and its firmer. I actually have not tried Euk. m

Purina Pro Plan. Our vet says the ingredients are just the same amount as the expensive other brands. Our Beagle loves it and does really well.

I feed my Boxers Flint River Ranch food. It is oven baked, contains NO PRESERVATIVES and is all human grade ingredients. Go to this link and read about it.
My dogs love it ! http://www.flint-river-dog-food.com/flint_river_ranch_ingredients.htm# best on the market. Many people don't choose to feed it as it is a little pricey but IMO well worth it.

If you buy it from the store try Pedigree or Purina Dog chow-depending on how big your dog is. And if you buy it from the vet try Science Diet. With Science diet they poo less and don't smell as bad either.. Don't buy store brand dog foods, because they have fillers in them like corn, and it's not good for your dog, it will also make him/her poo alot more and in turn make it smell really bad.
