i really want to go back out with him but how could i ask him out?

I think you should just go for it. If you like him, be mature and ask him out. If he says no -- at least you'll have your answer. Sometimes people just aren't compatible with each other, and one side has feelings and the other doesn't. One thing is for sure: if he doesn't want to go out with you again, you can definitely do better! Why would you want to go out with someone who doens't share your feelings? And if he does want to go out again, why sit around and let time go by? He might be thinking the same thing you are and be wondering how to ask you out! You have nothing to lose by being honest and asking him to go out again.
