Most terriers are great pets. My personal favorite are Rat terriers. Easy to train and great to get along with. Small too. Also don't rule out the shelter dogs. They have many many small dogs that would make great great pets if given the chance.
Also if none of those will do, my next suggestion: A techno Dog! Lol...you know those toy dogs that "act and behave like real dogs?"

Your local SPCA likely houses many dogs looking for good homes. Small mixed breed dogs of any sort make great house pets. Anything with poodle mixed in will likely shed little to none.
Best of luck.

It really depends on your personality there are different dogs for everyone dont settle on just any one dog without looking at alot of the rest there might be one better suited for you there are alot of diffrent websites that will guide you through the diffrent dogs even some that will actually quiz you on how active you are your preferred size and experiance level you need to handle each one I reccomend the sites http://www.terrificpets.com/dog_breeds/ http://www.akc.org with them you can not only look at each breed you can find breeders and they give you all the information you can use about each breed. I was looking into a basenji they are medium sized dog but they are very clean for more info on this dog you can go to http://www.basenji.org/ good luck finding the right dog for you.

I had a miniature Poodle I really loved. She was the perfect size to fit in the house, the car, pick up and carry, and she loved being a lap dog.
I also understand that King Charles Cavalier Spaniels are terrific small dogs.

This is a good site to have a play with ... based on what you choose as best for you, it'll come up with a list of ranked selections of what it considers to be suitable dogs - you can then click on those selections to find out a little more & compare the different types.
http://www.selectsmart.com/DOG/
I think if I were you then I'd make a list of the ones that most appealed to me & then find out more about them ...I'd also check out whether there are any rescue organisatons near me & the price of puppies & their availabity in my area before making my final decision.
Have fun choosing.

If you like small dogs you can't beat a toy poodle. They are super intelligent, easy to train, extrememly affectionate, loyal and they do not shed. I have four of them, mother and three daughters. I would give up my home before I could part with any one of them.

Jack Russel's are nothing but pure energy. I wouldn't recomend getting one unless you have hours every day to spend excersizing it.
A good small dog that's fairly easy to train and good with kids are Corgi's.
