I think Golden Retrievers are an extremely amiable and easily trained, Therefore making it a good candidate for being a family dog. The slight problem is that they may grow too big for your house, not sure how big your house is.

You need to go to your local animal shelter, and tell the staff there how big your yard is, if you have 3 or 6 foot fences etc... let them know the dog will be sharing space with 2 children, and please do take your kids along with you, we want the dog to choose you not the other way round. Why does it have to be cute, character is more important. If you have a small yard, then you will require a larger dog, if you have a large yard then a smaller dog would be better suited. The staff will advise you of the rest.

I would suggest a Golden Retriever, as long as you don't have a problem with hair/shedding. If this is an issue, a Boxer would be a good selection, unless you don't like slobber. Another solid alternative is a Schnauzer and the great thing there is they come in 2 sizes just in case space is an issue (miniature vs. standard). I would also suggest finding a NADOI licensed instructor in your area to set up training sessions and perhaps get even more breed-based advice prior to actually purchasing the animal. Best of luck!

Mutt, mutt, mutt. I tell people this all the time, because I not only believe in resucing dogs instead of paying hundreds or thousands for something specific, but I have found in my 30 years with dogs that mutts are always the best.

Having little ones at home, get a puppy though. You never know what kind of history shelter/rescue dogs could have.

Good luck!

My suggestion : RAT TERRIER!!

Great dogs! I have had 4 and they are similar to JRT( JACK RUSSELL TERRIER) but with a calmer but still displays the terrier great energetic personality. They can be cute pups.....and are small!

Another suggestion: Don't pick a dog because of its looks! There's is alot more then the eye can see! Some of those "cutely" dogs are worse then those "ugly" or not really goodlooking dogs. Also don't rule out a check to your local animal shelter!

I'd say a miniature poodle. Buy one from breeders where you can see the parents (or at least the mom) to get a good idea of the pup's potential personality. Poodles usually are good for all of the above. They're highly intelligent which makes them easy to train. They are usually energetic (though they aren't built for too much rough housing...more like chasing balls and running). And the miniature variety makes them fit into small spaces.

PUG! http://www.pugs.org/

Rat Terrier! http://www.ratterrierclub.com/

Both of these are expertly handled by kids in the AKC show ring, fun to play with not entirely breakable like a toy breed and they have high trainability. Spend some time with each, do your homework on any breed you choose and find out about health problems. Do not buy from a pet store look for local breeder who love their dogs and fancy their breed!

If you could have a slightly bigger dog, a Boxer is great with kids because they are always a kid!

Good luck.

Please talk to people who own/breed dogs before you make a decision. Find other people with kids in your neighborhood who have nice dogs and see what they have.

Please, I beg you, IGNORE anyone who suggests border collies. The average border collie is not going to work well in a house with kids running around. It will want to herd them. It will need a job to do and it will go insane in your small house. Plus, they will be too big for your house and they need tons of exercise.

Corgis may also be out as will many of the herding breeds because the urge to "herd" children is so strong. Herding dogs nip to herd.

Many of the terrier breeds are out because of their feisty, independent nature.

My grandpa (who bred and showed dogs in conformation, obedience and did herding with them) once said that when it came to dogs he always viewed them with their original purpose in mind.

That said, I will add that any dog bred to hunt and kill something bigger than itself---such as some terriers--might have more grit than I would want around young kids.

Look for a rescue dog that has an established personality, is already proven to be fun and likes kids. Has to be a puppy? Look for a rescue mutt with a good temperament that the rescue group has a good guess of what it will be.

Want a purebred for some reason---look for a Brittany.

A robodog.

Seriously, all dogs require training, and it takes months and months to train a puppy. There's housebreaking, obedience training - just getting through the regular puppy stuff like soiling and chewing up your stuff can take 9 - 18 months, depending on the breed and how diligent you are with training.

Well, you could get a Brittany, but you might not be able to find one locally at a decent price. A Beagle is a great dog, and they can be trained to be a guard dog or hunting dog in a short amount of time.
