My son is also an American soldier in the Army. He wants to visit his cousin in Mexico. His father is a Mexican, I am american. His father retained his mexican citizenship. He never became American. Does my son need a passport or will his military ID cover all that. Thanks for the help. His leave comes up soon and I promised I would find an answer for him. Thanks again.

No American needs a passport for a year or so. They extended the deadline both ways. He needs a birth certificate and governmentally issued ID.
However, if his Dad is a Mexican citizen he may have dual nationality. He'd need to paper it, though.

If you are entering Mexico by land transportation, you can use a combination of photo ID and birth certificate. Starting in 2009, you will need a passport for any kind of travel.
PS: starting in early 2007, you will need a passport for traveling to Mexico via plane or boat.

first of all if he was born in the United States he is not a mexican American,show some pride he is an American of hispanic descent,if you want him to be a mexican then tell him to go live in mexico,if your son was in the military he would not need you to look this information up for him,he would know the answer to you r questions.

The law will require a passport in less than 60 days. It makes good sense to apply for a passport b-4 he goes. It just makes it simpler and alot easier to go through customs.

I didn't need a past port to go to Mexico.
If your husband is an illegal alien, you should report him. You mean he didn't obtain American Citizenship!

He might need it know just to be able to return, but last year I went there and on the way back , they asked me for my documents and all I said was AMERICAN CITIZEN . they let me pass can you believe that? now I think the problem lies within our government on how we deal with illegals b/c if I came in like that Imagine everyone else?
