Nobody can truly answer this.
It depends on -
- how old is the chicken when you got it?
- how was it stored before you got it?
- what kind of water do you use (micro-organisms living in that water)
- what temperature do you call "cold"?
I would never keep a chicken in cold water ( = less than 10 degrees C) for more than 24 hours.

The water test is the best. It will let you know if it's been to hot outside for them. I'd just make a few changes: If it stands up on an angle, it is still ok If it stands up straight but is still touching the bottom, it is ok to bake with it As for salmonella, it is no more dangerous than a store-bought egg. As long as you aren't planning on eating it raw, it should be fine.
