A diary. Some day your friend may want to write about the trip. What better way than with a diary telling day-by-day thoughts, activities, weather issues, restaurants that had excellent food and places they'd like to see again - and why.

An inflatable travel pillow - the best ones have a snuggly terry-cloth cover.

Snap Maps of the city/cities they will visit - these things are sooooo incredibly handy, and make you look like less of a stupid tourist. Available at Brookstone and some bookstores.

If you know the city they are going to, buy a gift certificate for a free dinner at a fun/yummy restaurant there, so they can start out with a good meal!

I would get them a moneybelt that they wear under their clothes! They are easy to put on and not as susceptible to being stolen by those who look for tourist.
