We all genetically have different tolerance levels for one. The genetic component of why people suffer from certain diseases comes into play when a person's tolerance level has been reached. When you're taxed beyond your body's ability to tolerate toxic elements of your life, diseases start to appear. Environmental factors and emotional and mental stress factors all need to be taken into account together. When we're emotionally stressed our bodies produce things like cortisol and inflammation. Inflammation is the root cause of most illness. If you really want to delve into the subject, you might enjoy the book called Feelings Buried Alive Never Die.

Sensitivities and allergies are something of a mystery. They relate to the ways in which people's hormonal systems function, and are therefore similar to why one person can eat a lot and stay skinny, and another person can eat reasonably and gain weight. People process what goes in and out of their bodies differently.

However, there are factors which may make someone more likely to be affected, including childhood illness, a weakened immune system, stress, other allergies, prolonged exposure, lung or chest disease, exposure to multiple irritants, gastro-intestinal problems.

It's also true that people express reactions differently. One person may be choking and retching while another, whose body is actually similarly toxified, suppresses the reaction, which may lead to later illness.
