Are you by chance using a perfumed, "odor-free", type of litter? My cat absolutely despises it, so maybe the newspaper soaks up some of the perfume smell. Or, you have a well-read cat! LOL.

Cats are very picky, especially when it comes to their "potty" spot. If thats what he/she prefers, then it doesnt seem like it would be a problem to let her have it. Have you tried a different brand of litter? Maybe the smell of the litter you are using is not good enough for suck a picky kitty

maybe the other litter hurt his toes and the paper is nice to stand on....at least he uses the litter box; wish mine did///////

He was probley potty trained with just newspaper so thats why he needs to have some in there so he nos its ok.
