The proverb "When in Rome, do as the Romans do" comes to mind. But then, who are the Romans in the US? That said, the immigrants should learn English. Even if the forms are written in their native language, some technicalities are better understood if you know English. Besides, not all businesses have people who know a second language. However, we must understand that some immigrants come to the US when they are very old. They might have a hard time learning new things. There are also others who have learning disabilities. We cannot expect them lo learn English. That would be hypocritical when we have so many American-born people who don't know English well enough to pass a simple grammar, spelling, and vocabulaty test. AND I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT THE CHILDREN OR THE ONES WHO HAVE DISABILITIES. (I didn't see anything about "illegal" in your question. I don't know why fish <> < wrote "Because they need to stop forcing their language on the millions who belong here legally!")

One has to learn English so that the person can go freely any where in the world. It is the International language spoken almost everywhere in the world. It acts as an umbrella to safeguard one's interests. A decade ago to learn English, you had to attend costly English classes or purchase course material like tapes and books. Now you can learn English for free from the comfort of your home using the Internet. The BBC and the British Council offer a number of on line courses, which teach written and spoken English. You can also improve your English by watching television programs and reading English newspapers. For more information, visit http://tinyurl.com/qnzpt

They don't need Spanish unless they want a job that requires it. Over 200 languages are spoken in the US. Many of us have more than one language. The one language we need is English, but the second and third are a matter of personal choice. I didn't choose Spanish for any of my languages in high school or college, but others are free to if they care to.

If you want to improve your lot in life in this country - you'd better learn how to speak, read and write English.
I am one of your neighbors and I can most definitely speak more than one language - not as many as you claim - but at least I don't toot my own horn in a pathetic attempt to assert my superiority and/or point out America's inferiority.
If I took a job and/or moved to a Spanish speaking country, I'd brush up on my Spanish because I would be EXPECTED to speak, read and write proficiently.
Why are all Mexicans hung up on US citizens being proficient in Spanish?
Why do I have to press "2" if I want to "talk" to a machine in English?
This P.C. crap has gone WAY too far.

I think that learning more than one language is wonderful. I am bilingual and I also "SIGN". Children need to be taught another language from an early age. Sometimes adults are not able to grasp a new trick LOL new language.

Wow! You are really Hot Stuff!
Given your intelligence on this matter and as a linguist, you will understand that it is much less expensive to conduct business and life in a generalized area in one, primary language.
That means, one set of signs. One set of books. One language on the ballot box. One answer/greeting when calling on the phone and one language you teach the children (of America) to learn all other things about the world in general.
It makes no sense in terms of reason and logic, to have more than one language for any given country. It is a problem in all areas of the world, when any given group can't or refuses to learn the language of the country they may choose to live in. There are no exceptions to this that I know of.
So get with it Smarty Pants. Join the rest of us on the band wagon for ONE language in the United States. English.
It'll save a lot of money (we can then use to cure the disease, criminality, and welfare and immigration fraud caused by illegal Mexicans invading our country.) for the benefit of positive growth to the benefit of ALL LEGAL AMERICANS (including you and your family perhaps).
