A 4-day trip can be a lot of fun under your budget. If you already have a place to stay, then the daily expense should not be painful.
Some of the museums are accepting donations, that means you can pay $1 to get in such as Metropolitan Museum of Art. MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) is free on Friday night. Do a search and find out more about museum admissions. Tip: Food is very expensive in museum, bring your own.
Food, you do not want to dine at Chanterelle kind of restaurant. A decent Italian restaurant in Chelsea or Hell's kitchen, a 4-course dinner for 2 including a bottle of Pinot Noir will cost less than $100. Food in Chinatown will cost 50-70% less.
Broadway shows, try to catch the last minute tickets, this will save you a big chunk of $ (around 50% off), of course some of the shows might not be available.
Landmarks, Statute of Liberty is around $10, that takes you to Ellis Island as well. The staten Ferry is free, hope on and off for fun. Top of The Rock, see the entire NYC for less than $20, you can stay as long as you want. Central park and Times Square are free!
Commute, subway pass will save tons of $, also free transfer to all the buses.
A daily bus tour costs close to $100, if you are smart and dare to commute or walk, you can use the $ to shop at Century 21 or Filelene's Basement.
Keep in mind, clothing and shoes are tax free in NYC, the best areas are Soho and Union Square. Also, late January is the peak sale season!
You can budget your trip with all the information given!

That depends on the places you like to eat. If you can do McDonald's then you won't need a lot of money. But I bet after 4 days you would get pretty bored of it. And it also depends on if you have a hotel with a microwave and fridge. You can buy a couple of frozen meals and cook them there and keep some soda and juice in the fridge.
As far as how much money to bring for excursions....figure out what you want to do, visit those sites and find out how much admission is. If you plan on going to a museum DO NOT EAT THERE. The food is terrible at all of them. And I suggest a day trip to The Hampton's or Montauk Point. You can catch the Long Island Rail Road from Penn Station which will take you directly out there. It's nice just to go there to shop and see how the 'rich' people live.
I would go to the Bronx Zoo, Museum of Natural History, Central Park, Hit a show on Broadway (Stomp, which is off Broadway, was FANTASTIC and a lot of fun), Museum of Modern History and there are so many other events and museums that it is impossible to list them all from memory. Just hit up some sites for ideas.
As a NY native, I think it's a great city and a lot of fun!! Have a great time!!!

I've lived in NYC for over 13 years, and yes it can be expensive, but also you can have loads of fun while preserving your wallet. You can get by on 100 dollars a day if you know where to go. But if you plan on going to broadway shows, or to a baseball game you might very well spend 100 bucks at the game (A beer is about 8 dollars, hot dog like $5) Subway fares are going to increase to like $2.50, but you can get a week unlimited for about $31 dollars after the price hike. That should take care of ALL transportation within the city. Chinatown is a great place to be and very very cheap to eat at. My favorite restaurant there, the Congee house is pretty cheap. I went last time with 5 guys and all ate for under 80 bucks. Family style you can do with 100 dollars a day, but I'd bring more just in case. You never know, there can be something that you really really want to do. Good luck and have a blast. This is a great city.

about $1000 depending on your taste.
Rockefeller Plaza!!! Go to Top of the Rock! I think it was a much better view than Empire State cause you could actually see the empire state. Plus the obsv. deck was alot nicer!
