Alka Seltzer has always worked great for me. If there was a serious issue of it harming people then it would have been pulled off of the shelves long ago. The only thing I have heard bad about Alka Seltzer is to NOT give them to sea gulls because they drink the salt water and the seltzer mixed with the salt water explodes the stomache in the sea gull and they die. I live in Myrtle Beach and people have tried this repeatedly just for kicks and I have yet to see a sea gull fall to it's death.. If you are really concerned about your health when taking Alka Seltzer then I would reccommend going to their website and looking for the "contact us" button and let them know of your concern.

I don't know about the harmful ingredient, but I do know that I took Alka-Seltzers about twice a week for a few months and the last time I took one I threw it up along with a lot of blood. At the emergency room, they said it was because the alka-seltzer was eating the lining of my stomach....
Don't know how many others it will effect this way, please be wary of excess.

I think all Alka Seltzer tabs have aspirin which can cause problems for some people. The cold formulations may also have psuedoephedrine which people are talking about a lot these days. Psuedoephedrine is a decongestant which can be harmful to people w/ high blood pressure and some other health problems but has mostly been in the news because it is a main ingredient in crystal meth - methamphetamine. While psuedoephedrine can keep you a wake and increase your blood pressure, it does not have the addictive properties of crystal meth.

there is an extensive list of drug interactions on the link below.. I really didn't want to paste it into this message.. it's lengthy.
The only thing I found was on Snopes.com at it says: MMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED!! The FDA has announced a recall of all drug products containing PPA (phenylpropanolamine). The AAFES stock assortment contains 23 products containing this drug (see below) .... ALL MUST BE PULLED FROM SALE IMMEDIATELY and placed in controlled storage pending disposition instructions. In addition, customers presenting unused quantities of these items purchased from AAFES may be given full refunds. Locally printed signs will be placed as follows:

Yes I got that email too back in 2003. There are so many meds on the market with harmful ingredients are you gonna stop taking all of them?
Did you know that diet sodas have aspatame in them that was first produced 30 years ago as RAT POISON.
~What I am saying is, if alka seltzer works for you continue taking it.

The only thing I know about alka seltzer is it does have a high sodium content so if you have high blood pressure, or ulcers, you would want to avoid it, other than that, I don't know of any harmful
ingredients.

alka seltzer cold has psuedaphed in it. It is bad for those with blood pressure issues. Otherwise plain alka seltzer just has bicarbonate and aspirin in it.

I think you're likely referring to Phenylpropanolamine. Here's a web site that might help you out.
