you don't need a root canal just because your tooth is cracked, if he didn't say that you need a root canal then you dont need one.

I would suggest getting a second opinion. In some cases you need a root canal and in some you dont. I went in this morning for a cracked tooth, he thought he may be able to just put a filling in it but once he got in he realized it was infected and I ended up with a root canal. Never do anything you arent completely comfortable with. Always get a second opinion if you arent 100% sure you want to follow your dentist or doctors advice.

It depends on what you think. I had a cracked tooth that they tried a crown on to no avail. It ended up needing a root canal anyway. If it needs a root canal later you can have it done through the crown anyway.

If your dentist recommends a root canal before getting a crown, absolutely. Honestly, I can't see where a cracked tooth would not require one.
Also, crowns will either break and or fall off in time and need to be replaced. I've never heard of one lasting permanently, but they are worth having. A crown will keep that tooth protected from anymore breakage. Good Luck~

YES!! I got a crown without a root canal (against dentist's recommendation) and it fell off about a year later. It's safer in the long run...and you don't have to worry about infection under the crown.

Yes, I think it's mandatory, because a root canal removes the nerves from the tooth.
