He might not like the feel of the particular litter you are using. Have you tried different litter. If he is nervous he might want to get out of that box as quickly as possible so when he is done he moves on before covering it. If that's the case maybe putting the box an a location where he feels more secure might help.

I have both a male and a female cat, and I've found that the female is good about burying her poo, but the male doesn't seem to care, and just leaves it on top of the litter. I don't worry about it, I have a covered cat box and use really good litter, and keep it scooped out. I just figured it's a "male" thing, since my female covers hers.

thank you for bringing in a stray- As for clutter container preparation, maximum cats do instinctively, and that i've got not seen a cat from exterior have a situation with the litterbox interior. The trick is to get the cat to determine the place the clutter container is. i might set up greater than a number of packing packing containers throughout, and then because of the fact the cat gets used to getting in a clutter container, initiate getting rid of those in inconvenient places. additionally, in case you basically delivered the cat interior, it would be sturdy to maintain him limited to one room, with a clutter container in it, until eventually you get him to the vet and regarded at.

If he's using the box, try not to fret over the rest. I know that's hard when it smells.
Now, if he sees you cleaning the box he might get the idea and start burying on his own. But again, don't sweat it as long as he's using the box.
Good luck!

What i did when I had a kitten is I put her in the smallest bathroom, with the litterbox, and full of newspapers for a couple of days while we were gone. After those couple of days, we let her out, and she was okay!
