A professional: we have used dentists, doctors, solicitors, barristers, school head teachers -- you can also use policemen. Basically they want someone they can trace if they have to.

Anybody who knows you for at least 2 years that is not related. I actually asked my boss to do it. I received my passport with no problem. All else failing, if you have recently moved & no one around has known you for long enough, the post office can do it (As it said on the application. As you are in front of them, they can varify your photograph & signature.

It needs to be a professional -This means :
your doctor, a lawyer, a policeman, teacher..... It will give all examples on your passport application form.
