Actually, I don't think they should stop to prevent people from smoking. That should be a personal choice that the person should make on their own behalf. This is a free country and people jump down tobacco product companies throats for what reason? Because the smoking population spends their own money on cigs. So personally, I am no smoker but I am not tempted to buy cigarettes no matter what the commercial says. If that's what an individual wants to do w/ their then so be it. If that's the case then we should stop making alcohol, we should shut these fast foods joints down, etc.... so really, smoking and lung cancer is a matter of choice.

Not pro or con. I am a smoker.

Realities:

Lost State Taxes. What will replace those?

Black market. IE. Drugs. Would smokers then be imprisoned? (Remember prohibition?)

Farmers. Shall we stop growers and place them on welfare? They would starve on veggies.
Can you say Mexico? Blocks and blocks of veg warehouses on the US border. Been there.

Tobacco companies can survive without the US market. Foreign markets are their most lucrative. US tobacco is preferred.
Taxes in foreign countries are higher than US. Some cigs sell @$5-7 per pack.

Pros: somewhat healthier nation, slight decrease in health insurance (see cons)

Cons: approximately 15 thousand people jobless, rapidly developed black market for now illegal commodity, government taxation on other products increases, slight increases in health insurance for drugs to help with withdrawal, alcohol will be next on the hit list.

I think the cons outweigh the pros, don't you?
Lets leave it to personal choice.

Well, if it was stopped then the landfall the government made for itself would dry up and we would all be taxed to make up the difference.

Perhaps we should allow capitalism and knowledge take it's course rather than mandating an industry out of business.

I resent the government trying to tell me what I may or may not put into my own body. Knowing the potential risks, it is my decision, NOT anyone elses. For that reason I will never go to New York. If I want to eat transfats, no bloody government is going to tell me I can't. Next thing our Senators will be running around and telling us we cannot appear in public wearing blue or red, that might determine which party we belong to!! Could get us hurt. In other words, I believe in personal responsibility for personal choices, and I greatly resent the government trying to legislate those choices.

pros- no one will get sick and die cause of it, the world would be a much better place, and probably there would be less gangs
cons- al ot of people are hooked on th stuff and they will try to get it elsewhere, people are probably more likely to suicide if they are cray, and all of the people that work in the tobacco industry will lose their jobs, it makes a lot of money

because its the most dangerous drug ever. even if you dont use it, it can still kill you (2nd hand smoke). its also very addicting. another reason is tobacco companies use commercials and toys to promote their products to kids. eg. joe camel, toy cigs, etc.
