It's a fairly recent bruise. Red is most recent, then it turns blue.. As the bruise ages, it will fade to light purple-ish green and finally yellow.

the trauma causing the bruise turns blue because the capillaries break and a small amount of blood escapes and flows below the skin surface
as it heals it turns greenish yellow then fades until it disappears
this means all that blood was absorbed
a blue bruise is called ecchymosis

bruises do turn blue, venous blood which has a bluish cast is what makes bruises. Deep bruises turn purple and even deeper magenta. They turn all sorts of colors as they heal, and in time all bruises are reabsorbed.
