If she were to find a one-bedroom in Astoria for $1200 (not impossible) she should be prepared to hand over at least $3600 up front (first month, last month and security deposit). It is illegal for a managing agent or owner to charge a rental "fee" (a broker can).
It's very important to find out if the apartment is in a rent stabilized building, about half of apartments are. The rent in a rent stabilized building is regulated by the DHCR and protects tenants from massive rent increases when the lease is up. Stabilization laws give tenants the right to renew a lease for up to 2 years and make it harder for a landlord to evict someone (among other things). If she does not get one of these apartments then she needs to be prepared to possibly move whenever a lease is up. Please check this website:

They are going to run a credit check on her. She will need a guarantor with good credit to cosign the lease if she has bad/no credit, is a student or otherwise cannot prove that she can afford the apartment. Roughly, someone would have to make about $40,000 to afford a place that was $1000/month. Recently, a few friends of mine were told they needed to prove that they made 60 times the monthly rent amount per year.

Good luck!

Well, the first thing to know is that 1 bedrooms are the most expensive option for a single person in New York. Also, as she will most likely have to sign a lease, there will probably be a broker fee involved (usually equal to one month's rent.) To get an idea of what is available and the price range your daughter should spend some time on Craig's List. (also, on the NYC craig'slist.com page you can specify neighborhood)

Having lived in NY metro for a long time. I would recommend that she takes a room in newport, Jersey city. It is right across the river from manhattan (check out newportnj.com) or check on craigstlist. There is no broker fees involved and it eases the pain of settlign into manhattan where the broker wants 2 months of rent as commission. At the minimum she is looking at 1400 for a 1 bedroom (somewhere safe and sound).

Don't know about deposits or costs, but to look for one she could go to new york, and vacation in a hotel, and read the classifieds or go around to apartments.

If you can go for 2 or 3 days and do nothing but check out Apts. You can then see what she can get for her money and see the different areas. It helped me out SO much! Reading books and Newspapers can only help out so much.
also check out rent.com
