It sounds like he was setting you up.
I know your looking for a particular term - and its on the tip of my tounge but for the life of me I cant think of it.

Well I guess all bosses are like that. Within an organization chart, I notice there is in no where we as employee will ever climb higher and higher. When your salary is reach to a certain limit amount, they will wait for you to mess up abit just to fine a good enough excuse to eliminate you completely. That is how they manage and balance out their running expenses.
