Newer cars are taxed depending on their emissions of CO2 (carbon-dioxide) during the official EC fuel-consumption test.

The CO2 rating is proportional to the fuel consumption, which depends on things like gearing, weight, aerodynamics, wheels & tyres, and how the engine is designed and tuned. Just because both cars are 1400cc doesn't mean both will use the same amount of fuel in these tests, or emit the same amount of CO2. Therefore, just because both are 1400cc, they may be in different bands for car tax.

You can check what your cars' CO2 ratings are here: http://www.vcacarfueldata.org.uk/search/search.asp

And check what that makes the car tax here: http://direct.gov.uk/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicleArticles/fs/en?CONTENT_ID=10012524&chk=X2gG9G

If they are both the same size engines it'll be down to yours throwing out lower amounts of CO2, thats how its worked out these days, thats why mine is £190 - grrrr.
